Matthew Baker

Dr. Matthew Baker is a landscape ecologist interested in the impacts of biophysical processes on the ecosystem structure and function of streams, floodplains, and woodlands in human-dominated landscapes. An expert in geospatial analysis and modeling, Matthew is responsible for novel applications for analysis of riparian buffers, stream hydrography, impervious surfaces, and urban forest patches. He also co-developed Threshold Indicator Taxa ANalysis (TITAN), a method for detecting evidence of ecological community thresholds. A 2014 research fellow at SESYNC, Matthew has held appointments at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and Utah State University. Previously a Research Professor with the U.S. Geological Survey, Matthew is now Professor and Associate Dean at University of Maryland Baltimore County. Matthew earned a BA from Emory University and both his MS and PhD from the University of Michigan.
