Scientific Review Committee Member

Dr. Selena Ahmed is an Associate Professor of Sustainable Food Systems at Montana State University. Selena is an ethnobotanist with research and outreach interests at the intersection of the ecological, cultural, and health aspects of food systems. The ultimate translational goal of Selena’s collaborative research program is to transform the food system through evidence-based innovations that support human and planetary health. Towards this goal, Selena and her research group focus on the following three priority areas through active community engagement: Sustainable Agriculture, Biodiversity, Crop Quality, and Climate Change; Food Environments, Food Security, and Sustainable Diets; and, Building Capacity of Future Food System Leaders. She is particularly interested in identifying the socio-ecological determinants of well-being in the food system, which has included work in China, India, Morocco, Venezuela, Belize, the Dominican Republic, and the United States. Selena’s work involves quantifying the influence of agricultural practices and food environments on biodiversity, crop quality (biochemical composition), farmer livelihoods, food security, dietary quality, and health outcomes in the context of global change. She completed her PhD at the City University of New York and the New York Botanical Garden in cultural anthropology and ethnobotany. Selena was a member of SESYNC’s Scientific Review Committee.
