Dr. Thomas Sterner is a Professor of Environmental Economics at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Thomas’ work is focused on the design of environmental policy instruments. His recent research focuses on issues of acceptability of policy instruments, their distributional effects, and ways of making efficient instruments, such as taxes, more acceptable by refunding or using revenues constructively. Currently, Thomas works on a range of issues from fishing and marine management to green bonds and green finance, radiation protection, biodiversity and ecosystem services, chemicals management, ambient air, transport, and industrial applications. Still, his largest focus is on policy instruments used to deal with climate change and other large-scale environmental problems. Thomas serves on numerous boards and among his honors are: member of the French Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (FAERE); Chevalier (Knight) in the French Légion d’Honneur, appointed in 2020; Doctor of Science Honoris Causa, University College Dublin; Pro Studio et Scientia Award, University of Gothenburg; and European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists Fellow 2019. Thomas served on SESYNC’s External Advisory Board.
