The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) is pleased to welcome our newest Research Associate, Dr. Nicholas R. Magliocca. At SESYNC, Nick’s research will focus on understanding human-environment interactions and their consequences for environmental and socio-economic sustainability. He will be primarily focused on two research projects. The first will involve working as a part of a large, interdisciplinary team composed of researchers from Resources for the Future, Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, George Mason University, and the Maryland Institute College of Art, as well as several international institutions. The team will investigate adaptive responses within the Baltimore-Washington region to repeated hurricane and heat waves. The second project will use agent-based virtual laboratories to explore transitions in the sustainability of land-use and livelihood strategies in the developing world in response to global environmental and economic change.
Nick comes to SESYNC from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he is a Postdoctoral Research Associate under the National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded GLOBE Project. Under this project, Nick provides land change science domain knowledge, supports case entry and management, engages the land change science community (in particular, the Global Land Project [GLP] and the International Network of Research on Coupled Human and Natural Systems [CHANS-Net]), and develops innovative research questions to which GLOBE will be applied. He will continue a part-time appointment at GLOBE through March 2014.
Nick received his PhD in Geography and Environmental Systems from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in fall 2012. He also holds a MS in Environmental Management from Duke University and a BS in Environmental Systems: Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution from the University of California, San Diego.
