Dr. Joseph JaJa was a founding member of SESYNC’s leadership team and served as Director of Cyberinfrastructure from 2011 to 2015. He is a Professor at the University of Maryland, holding joint appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS). Joseph has published extensively in a number of areas, including parallel and distributed computing, combinatorial optimization, algebraic complexity, very-large-scale integration (VLSI) architectures, machine learning, and data science. He has received numerous awards including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' Fellow Award in 1996, the 1997 R&D Award for the development of software for tuning parallel programs, as well as the Association for Computing Machinery's Fellow Award in 2000. He has served on several editorial boards and is currently serving on the advisory boards for several conferences and workshops. Joesph earned his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University in 1977.
