Dr. Mary K. Muth is director of the Research Triangle Institute’s (RTI) Food Economics and Policy group and conducts research studies to analyze the impacts of policies, regulations, and other initiatives affecting food and agriculture. Mary specializes in analyses in the areas of nutrition, food security, food waste, food pricing, food labeling, food reformulation, and food safety. With extensive experience in multiple modes of primary data collection; analysis of food availability, purchase, and consumption data; and development of economic models of the impacts of food policy, Mary has authored or co-authored over 90 project reports and policy briefs. Mary has also published papers in the Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Journal of Food Protection, Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Nutrition Journal, Nutrition Reviews, and others. In addition, Mary has testified before Congress, briefed Congressional and Administration staff on study results; and was chair of the NASEM steering committee on “Data and Research to Improve the U.S. Food Availability System and Estimates of Food Loss.” She also served on the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) committees "Strategies to Reduce Sodium Intake" and "Examination of the Adequacy of Food Resources and SNAP Allotments." Mary received her PhD in Economics from North Carolina State University. Mary served as a member of SESYNC’s External Advisory Board.
